drunk/sober/high: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

When Blog heard about Musical Forum’s production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, we knew we had to go appreciate it the best way we know how: a drunk/sober/high triple feature. One of our very own Blog babies would be starring in the show, after all. Some of us had seen the movie, even a live showing of the movie with props, but a live theatre production? This was something that we were shivering in antici-

“Say it! Say it! Say it!”

-pation for.

The show ran from November 4, 2021, through November 7, 2021 for a total of four shows. Three of us prepared for the grand event: our designated Drunk took a few shots before heading to the show, our High took an edible, and our Sober waited patiently like a good audience member. The online reserve tickets ran out within hours of their release, and Musical Forum was able to grant us some media tickets, but Sober, bless their heart, waited at the door.

Sober: *waiting an hour and a half before the start of the show* If necessary, I will fistfight every single person here to get a ticket.

Drunk: Hi, we’ve got media passes!

But once we were in, we were in, and all we needed was for the good ol’ show to start. Meanwhile, we took in the room and the set before us.

Drunk: *points at a painted clock on the set* I can’t believe it’s perpetually quarter after twelve.

Non-party member: Daylight savings is super weird this year, huh.

Drunk every 5 seconds: Oh my god, I don’t recognize anyone here. It’s because I’m a STEM bitch, isn’t it?

High every 5 seconds in response, half-awake: Mmm…

Sober: These prop bags are so cute!

Drunk: Confetti!

And then the show began.

Drunk: Oh man. I am just vibing.

High: I am sleepy.

Sober: Why do people keep yelling “asshole” when someone says “Brad”??

Sober, all of two seconds later, upon opening the pamphlet: ohhHHHHH

Drunk: Glow stick! *cracks with one hand while holding the newspaper over their head*

High: I hope they don’t touch me—I’m too high for this.

Sober, literally anytime someone jumps into someone else’s arms and the other person manages to carry them bridal-style: HOLY SHIT!!!

High: OMG, I love snapping my fingers to the beat!!

Drunk, when a character reaches a high note or has a nice vibrato: Oh man, these people got some PIPES!

Sometime in the middle of the show:

Drunk: wawawawawawawawa

High: ?

Drunk: wawawawawawawawa

High:

Drunk: wawawawawawawawa

High: Oh you’re making that sound.

Every few minutes

Drunk: On this day, I was reminded just how gay I am.

High: I’m horny.

High: *stares intensely at Rocky’s abs and legs*

Drunk: Titties!

Drunk: I forgot how little sense this show made sober in the first place.

Drunk:

Drunk: God I missed live theatre.

After the show

Drunk: Wow, everyone was so hot.

High: I—I KNOW!

Drunk: Definitely starting to sober up now, though.

High: No, it hit me during the second act, and WOW. Their legs! Wow. Still feeling it…

Sober: OH MY GOD! I wish I had more confetti to throw! That was so much fun!

What were our favorite parts of the show?

Drunk: I usually really, really hate audience participation, but during the show, I literally couldn’t have cared less. I loved screaming. I loved throwing confetti. There was a point where one of the characters sprayed us with a water gun and I just...laughed?

High: I usually fall asleep during any form of live entertainment or movie, and when I’m high, it’s waaaaay worse. Cannot finish a movie for shit! This show, though? Awake the whole time, especially during the second act when everyone was decked out in lingerie, whoa. Loved the second act. I didn’t know if I wanted to just completely admire everyone’s hotness or if I also wanted to be on stage and be hot, too.

Sober: This was absolutely WONDERFUL! I was never much of a theater person but I enjoyed EVERY SINGLE minute of this—each character had so much life to them; the costumes, set design, and overall aesthetic were PHENOMENAL; and it was a great combination of both hilarious and edge-of-your-seat exciting! There was a point where the person playing Frank broke character after the audience kept saying “asshole” and said “We’re really gonna do that every time, huh?”, which was hilarious. I’ve never watched the original Rocky Horror movie or anything, but the person next to me said they NAILED everyone’s voices.

It was truly a wonderful time. Thank you, Musical Forum, for putting on such a wonderful show. Thank you to the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the production!
