Pros of staying on campus during Thanksgiving Break

During Thanksgiving Break last year, I was fortunate enough to be able to go home, but due to having a not-so-well-paying summer job and because of how close this break is to winter break, I'm planning on staying on campus this year. For those of you who are also in a similar position, I’ve gathered a list of pros for staying on campus.

Saving money

As I’ve already mentioned, staying on campus for Thanksgiving Break tends to save you money if you’re one of the unfortunate many who has to travels from home to Brown by plane. (I personally spent a nice $400 on my flight home last year — not worth it.) Imagine all the things you could use that money for: coffee, boba tea, offcampus food, a trip to somewhere way nicer than cornfield Illinois, etc. Really, if the price is that high, it’s better to stay on campus.

Studying

No classes for basically five days means studying for five days. Instead of having to spend time filling yourself with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and all that other stuff, you can fill yourself with knowledge! (That, or you can fill yourself with uninterrupted hours of TV show and movie watching.)

Empty campus

While campus is fairly empty from 7am-11am on most weekend mornings, Thanksgiving Break lets you experience a pretty much empty campus without having to wake up so early. Yes, it might be a bit creepy to witness, but there’s something magical about not having to wait in line at the Ratty at 12pm and not having to speed walk past a group of slow walkers.

Better weather

Although last year was an exception, if you stay on campus and if you’re from a very cold area (i.e. the Great Lakes region), then you’re almost guaranteed a range of temperatures much nicer than the ones back home. Your family might be eating turkey back home while you’re eating granola bars here, but who is the one who isn’t in blistering cold 10-30 degree Fahrenheit weather? You.

Avoiding the “Turkey Drop”

The turkey drop is this wonderful thing where ooey-gooey romantic high school couples come back home from their respective colleges, reunite, and then break up. Sounds fun, right? Well, from personal experience, it isn’t. So, instead of going home and having your boyfriend come over to your house Thanksgiving morning to break up with you (hypothetically speaking), you can stay on campus and avoid that situation (at least until Winter Break).

Staying on campus during Thanksgiving Break might seem sad, but it really isn’t that bad. And who knows? It might save you from a day of snot-dripping crying and an inability to eat your uncle’s mac-and-cheese.
