Summer in PVD: Bucket List

As you sit in the dark Rock basement, trying to get a suntan from the single ray of light that reaches your stack, what better way is there to procrastinate than by planning out the not-so-distant days when you’ll be frolicking on the other side of that window? Whether you’re a pre-med with an UTRA, a non-pre-med with an UTRA, or staying at Brown over the summer for some other inexplicable reason (do you exist?), here’s an expertly compiled bucket list for your summer in PVD.

  1. Explore Roger Williams Park – yes, I’m suggesting you leave campus. You'll survive, I promise. family with giraffe
  2. Go to Waterfire – Full lightings are held every month during the summer. Grab your summer fling and head down to the water for a romantic date night. (Or go alone. Both are equally great options).
  3. Go surfing in Newport – and by “surfing” I mean lie on the beach and watch your friend from LA surf without you.
  4. Visit Block Island – if you’re still awake after the bus/ferry journey over there, explore Block Island’s beautiful beaches, hikes, and lighthouses. block island
  5. Go to the Hope Street Farmers' Market – make your mom proud. Visit the weekly farmers' market at the corner of Hope and Blackstone Blvd. every Saturday morning for fresh food and live music.
  6. Partake in Pride fest – RI Pride is one of the most active LGBTQ organizations in New England. Put on your brightest colors and join their parade on June 15th in celebration of Pride Month.
  7. Spend the 4th of July in Bristol – Bristol’s 4th of July parade is (allegedly) the oldest in the United States, an honor that they take very seriously (see below). fourth-july-bristol
  8. Bike around – grab a jump bike (or a scooter) and exert minimal effort as you get lost on one of Providence’s many trails. Seriously, you’ll probably get lost. Bring provisions.
  9. Mess with Summer at Brown students – Spend your days cooking up creative ways to mess with the hoards of high schoolers who will have taken over your campus. Maybe this involves buying yourself a lanyard and a drawstring backpack and pretending to be one of them, perhaps giving a few false directions here and there. Nothing too serious. PreCollege
  10. Road trip – when all else fails, rent a car and drive literally anywhere else. Providence is a small city.
