How did ADOCH know?: the story of two girls with bangs
When I signed up to be an ADOCH host for some random pre-frosh, I understood that I was arguably the kindest person in the world. However, I did forget about this great act of benevolence until I received an email midway through my Friday, granting me the name and number of my future day-long roommate. Immediately, I realized I had to find out how early she was coming on Sunday; that thought translated into a curated text sent at 1 a.m., resulting in vibes hopefully somewhere in between "I-am-your-college-mentor-ready-to-guide-you" and "Hey-I-am-also-18-and-cool." Her response came in the next morning and included a ":-)." From that moment onwards, I knew we were going to get along just fine. What I didn't anticipate, however, is just how great our pairing would be. When I went to pick her up from the shuttle, I told her she could identify me as the girl with bangs and a pink backpack. She replied that she had bangs and a green backpack. While the ":-)" had implied compatibility, this new information was taking things to a new level. I have bangs. She has bangs. We both have pastel backpacks. Like, maybe this is a joke, but also maybe the statistics of this are a little impressive. After meeting, we had literally the most awkward hug-handshake-high-five you could possibly imagine. I apologized for being a mess. She forgave me. It was lovely. When I began to wander aimlessly, she reminded me that she had to check into ADOCH. We headed that way, and I began to learn more about her. She is also hoping to be a Literary Arts concentrator (of course) and is interested in philosophy.Soon enough, our chatter at check-in turned into us hanging out and me introducing her to the friends we ran into across campus. Essentially, I completely hijacked ADOCH and only sent my pre-frosh to the Activities Fair. The day, ultimately, was a huge success. She was already committed to the school but grew to love it after spending the day on campus. Additionally, we both left with a new friend from the experience. However, I'm still a little suspicious of exactly how we got paired together for ADOCH. Sure, maybe our concentration interests were similar. Yeah, maybe also she expressed interest in the publications that I work for. Potentially, we might have also had some interest in dance and theatre on campus. However, I don't see how any of this information could have created the pairing I was a part of. There is a potential that many of us ~humanities~, ~artistic~, ~creative~ people dress and cut our hair the exact same way, but I'd like to think ADOCH match offered something a little deeper.I'd like to believe that ADOCH saw two girls with bangs (even though ADOCH does not take photos of participants) and knew exactly what type of friendship dynamic they were creating. ADOCH realized that, truly, any person with bangs is compatible with any other person with bangs; there are absolutely no cases to dispute this. (Name one. I dare you.) Thus, ADOCH did what ADOCH is meant to do. It provided a pathway for a pre-frosh to get to know a student who is, at least in terms of hairstyle, just like them.If you haven't hosted for ADOCH before, I'd really recommend it. Who knows? You may just meet your own mini-you. Image via.
