Event: Alissa Quart: Nonfiction!@Brown Lecture SeriesLocation: Smith-Buonnano Hall Room 106Time: 6:00 p.m.Alissa Quart ’94, journalist, editor, poet, and acclaimed author of Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America (2018), discusses economic inequality and the future of journalism. She is also the author of the books Branded and Monetized. Quart is a regular contributor to The New York Times, writes a column for The Guardian called “Outclassed,” and is Executive Editor of the Economic Hardship Project, a nonprofit she co-founded with writer Barbara Ehrenreich. Event: Hip Hop Lecture Series at Brown UniversityLocation: Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (85 Waterman Street)Time: 1:00 p.m.Professor Tricia Rose’s award-winning book, "Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America," is considered foundational text for the study of hip hop, one that has defined what is now an entire field of study. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Black Noise, Professor Rose and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University will host a series of lectures that explore hip hop culture and its legacy.Tuesday's lecture will be by Bakari Kitwana, author of The Hip-Hop Generation, Executive Director of Rap Sessions, and Co-founder of the National Hip-Hop Political Convention.Wednesday, February 13thEvent: Right-Wing Movements and Neo-Nationalism in Central EuropeLocation: Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs Room 155Time: 5:00 p.m.Central Europe has produced some of the most potent challenges to the norms of liberal democracy in recent years. While western observers have focused a considerable amount of attention on the institutional shifts that stem from these challenges, there is less information available on the social movements that lie behind them.
