Go to the Latin Carol Celebration Tonight!

Being a Classics concentrator sometimes has its downsides, like reading about people from 2000 years ago, investing all your time and energy in dead languages, and having people constantly ask, 'what are you going to do with that?' But once a year, we readers of Latin emerge from the woodwork victorious. That’s right: tonight is the Latin Carol Celebration. Here are some reasons to go at 8 P.M. to the First Baptist Meetinghouse in America on 75 N. Main St. #1: Holiday cheer! What could be better than walking down the hill for the first time in three weeks to go to one of Providences'  most beautiful churches  AND America's first Baptist meeting house? Celebrate the start of being able to listen to Christmas music without your friends looking at you weirdly. church #2: Classics are relevant!Who doesn’t need a little Greek or Latin (or Sanskrit!) in their life sometimes? Ever wondered where all your English words come from (and your Spanish and French and Portuguese and Italian and Romanian words)? Confused as to what your weird friend studying Latin is actually doing all day? Come! #3: Someone with a huge card in English will tell you what to do, when.Don’t be intimidated by the sleek, cool, aloof Classics students you’ll be sitting with. There will be someone with a big card standing behind the pulpit telling you what to do and when. Just play it cool and come. For extra points, refer to this person as the signifier. For even more extra points, translate this casually to someone next to you as “sign guy.” carol singers #4: Hear some really good music. Missed the Halloween Organ Concert? Come hear University Organist Mark Steinbach play! Incidentally, he practices in Sayles during my Latin class, which gives our reading that little extra ~flair~. The Chattertocks will also be there, singing a special rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas that I’ve heard ‘brings the house down.’ #5: It’s only an hour. What else will you be doing? Wondering if your friends have started studying for finals yet? Sitting around at the Ratty? Relocate that hour of Youtube videos to the Church pews. More information about the celebration can be found here, and if you’re looking to get hyped, check out this awesome video. See you tonight at 8! Images via, via, and via.
