From Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, fashion history is dominated by the names of Parisian couturiers. But as speaker Valerie Steele, director of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s museum, will note, great designers can’t claim sole credit for the city’s fashion success. In the Brown Library’s annual Yoken Lecture, Steele argues that Paris’ reputation for cutting-edge style ultimately rests on the strength of its fashion culture, created by a host of actresses, dandies, milliners, artists and writers. Metcalf Auditorium, Chace Center, 20 North Main Street.Tuesday, May 1Event: From Climate Change to Political and Personal ChangeLocation: Watson Institute, 111 Thayer StreetTime: 12-1pmWhat is the future of global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Can we build an economy powered by clean, renewable energy in time? John Sterman, a professor of management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explores these questions with an interactive simulation developed by MIT and ClimateInteractive.org.
