DRAM
Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith, otherwise known as Big Baby, Drama J, and now DRAM (Does Real Ass Music), was born in Germany and spent most of his childhood in Hampton, Virginia. An active member of his youth church choir, DRAM only began experimenting and learning about rap in middle school. Since then, DRAM has taken a circuitous path to a career in music, taking on various odd jobs and attending Kentucky State University for a year. Eventually, in 2013, DRAM committed to pursuing a successful music career. In 2016, he found that success in the form of the smash-hit, quintuple platinum certified “Broccoli.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K44j-sb1SRYA collaboration with rapper Lil Yachty, “Broccoli” was the lead single from DRAM’s debut studio album Big Baby DRAM. However, “Broccoli” wasn’t DRAM’s first big hit. The single “Cha Cha” from DRAM’s debut EP, #1Epic, peaked at number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart and served as inspiration for Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” DRAM has kept busy recording several tracks with previous Spring Weekend performer Erykah Badu and touring with Chance the Rapper.
DRAM’s style is a dynamic mix of playful pop, soulful R&B, and clever raps. When asked about the unique nature of his music, DRAM responded with the following: “There was a void that needed to be filled just in regards to spreading good vibes.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzMhcP7ab3kIf you somehow missed out on “Broccoli” and want a taste of DRAM, check out his music Soundcloud, Spotify, or apple music.
