Fresh Albums Vol. II
A few months back we started a new segment devoted to album reviews, both past and upcoming. Last month brought an incredible new batch of music, and here we separated out some of the most dynamic and creative. This feature will take a look at established artists and collaborators but focusing primarily on relatively underground musicians. Here we go.Hippie Sabotage | Providence | Feb. 5
Known for their sensational stage presence, the Sacramento-born and raised brothers debut their third studio album following up Vacants and Sunny. The album is slow-moving and soulful throughout, standing apart from the duo's past projects in its diverse selection of samples and absence of background vocals. Plus, the album name is Providence!Moodymann | DJ-Kicks | Feb. 19
Kenny Dixon Jr., performing under the pseudonym Moodymann, has remained a relative mystery in the R&B and house music scene for the past few decades. In a rare interview with Red Bull Music Academy back in 2010, the DJ discusses his origins and influences as an artist, famously saying, "I'm not going to play the hottest tracks in the world, but what I will do is give you the truth on them turntables." Set some time aside to listen through the entire album. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.Miguel | Rogue Waves | Feb. 26
Presenting a selection of remixes of "Waves" from Wildheart (2015), the mini-album features Tame Impala, Travis Scott, and Oregon-based Remix Artist Collective (RAC), among other artists. Ranging in design from psychedelic styling, heavy synths, and country western, Rogue Waves' strength lies in its ability to provide an melodic outlet for whatever mood you're in.Porches | Pool | Feb. 5
Started in 2010 by lead musician Aaron Maine, Porches' underlying vibe leans heavily on synths, creating a seemingly underwater tone. As Pitchfork pointed out, the band's "homespun electronic sound" is both funky and introspective, leading to incredibly smooth transitions between tracks. This album will only increase Porches' cult following, which was sparked by the band's last LP, Slow Dance in the Cosmos.https://open.spotify.com/user/blogdailyherald/playlist/7Mk06iAwemPpK2IwKh4BANImages via, via, via, and via.
