Join Sarah Chavez as she unpacks the history behind today’s Día de Muertos traditions. Learn how Día de Muertos connects to a rich legacy of resistance that defines identity, cultivates community, and helps to decolonize the borders between the living and the dead.

Talk: Race & Inequality in America

The "Race &" in America series draws on the expertise of Brown scholars to investigate the origins, history and enduring effects of racism. This discussion panel will feature Prudence Carter, Sarah and Joseph. Jr. Dowling Professor of Sociology, Jose Itzigsohn, Professor of Sociology, and Jennifer Nazareno, Barrett Hazeltine Assistant Professor of the Practice of Entrepreneurship. Keep an eye out for the next installment in this series, “Race & Poetry in America”, later this semester.

Event: “Aggie” film screening and panel

Come watch "Aggie", a feature-length documentary that explores art, race, and justice through the story of art collector and philanthropist Agnes “Aggie” Gund’s life. Emmy-nominated director Catherine Gund ’88 focuses on her mother’s journey to explore the power of art to transform consciousness and inspire social change. 

Talk: Reimagining Capitalism

Time: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Author of “Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire”, Harvard Professor Rebecca Henderson, will discuss what’s wrong with modern capitalism and lay out a roadmap for how business can help to catalyze the systemic change we need by building a capitalism that works for everyone.

Event: LGBTQ Center Spooky Social

Location: Campus Center, LGBTQ Center (Room 323)

Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Happy Halloween to the LGBTQ community! Please join the LGBTQ Center (323 Faunce) on Friday, October 29 from 1-3 PM for some spooky music, treats, and arts and crafts! Raffle tickets will be given to anyone who shows up in costume. Winners will get a mysterious prize. No tricks, just treats!

Event: CCB, CCP, and UGT Presents: Halloween Extravaganza

Location: Campus Center

Time: 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Open mic starting at 7 p.m.) 

Head to the Campus Center on October 30th from 3-10 pm for a mystifying menagerie of Halloween events! Carve pumpkins with the Class Coordinating Board, receive your fortune from tarot card readers, make your own Halloween-themed stuffed animal, experience performances with Underground Thursdays (starting at 7 p.m. in The Underground), and wind down for a spooky movie night with free refreshments! Enjoy all of these events with your scariest costumes for a night of eerie events and sinister scares! Sign up for the open mic here

Event: SoBear's Halloween Party!

Location: The Underground (Campus Center)

Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Join SoBear Activities Club from 6-8 pm in the Underground (Campus Center) for their annual Halloween Party! Activities include a photo booth, raffles, karaoke, decorating pumpkins, and chocolate.

Event: Hocus Pocus Movie Night

Location: New Watson (Room 101)

Time: 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Join the Dept. of Public Safety to watch the Halloween cult classic, Hocus Pocus! (Clearly they took some inspiration from the recent filming of Hocus Pocus II at the RI Historical Society). If you want to learn what all the hype is about, come by! Treats will be on hand.

Event: Midnight Halloween Organ Recital

Location: Sayles Hall

Time: Doors open at 11:30 p.m. (Seating is limited! Even pre-covid this event was difficult to get seats to due to high demand. Arrive early!)

 Mark Steinbach, Brown University Organist and Senior Lecturer in Music, will perform the annual Midnight Halloween Organ recital, October 31 at 11:59 pm Sayles Hall on the 1903 Hutchings-Votey pipe organ. Doors will open at 11:30 pm. In lieu of traditional seating, please bring pillows/blankets and come in costume! Note that seating space in the auditorium is limited, so please arrive on time to the event to ensure seating.
