Myers-Briggs types at Brown
The Three Day Relationships survey brought us some superinteresting anonymous results about the campus! Stay tuned in the coming weeksfor posts and infographics getting at the heart of love at Brown! But for now, let’s take a look at the Myers Briggs types of our campus (using responses from982 students).
Extraversion (E) — Introversion (I)
In the general population, the E-I split is almost exactly50-50. For every person that gets energy from spending time with other people, there’s one that gets energy from being alone and introspecting. Brown issimilar to this split, with 54% of Brown students being extraverts and 46% beingintroverts.
Sensing (S) — Intuition (N)
This is the most striking contrast. Generally, 25% of people are N and 75% are S. But at Brown, the bias is in the completely opposite direction! Here we have 78% N with only 22% S. Since those who are Sensing prefer learning with their senses and getting hands-on experience, a very specific classroom experience is necessary to fit well with the S. They might prefer concentrations having to deal with facts in their immediate surroundings rather than abstractions: concentrations like architecture, education, VISA, engineering, or MCM. On the other hand, concentrations about patterns and abstracts—anything from math to biochemistry to English—might lend themselves more to an N. Brown offering more of the latter type of concentration explains the big disparity in representation of N versus S. Forget about legacy or being an athlete; simply having an N type personality gives you an *eight* times increase in your expected acceptance rate to Brown.
Thinking (T) — Feeling (F)
The number of Thinkers on this campus might surprise you. While 40% of the general populace is a T, only 32% of Brown students are. Thisdoesn’t mean that we’re thinking less, however. F just means that when we’rethinking, our decision-making process includes more interpersonal and emotionalfactors instead of solely cold hard facts. The overrepresentation of Fs oncampus probably contributes to our friendly, inclusive campus culture—asopposed to some other top schools that are more cold and competitive.
Judging (J) — Perceiving (P)
Brown is exactly the same as the population when it comes to being Judging or Perceiving! We are 55% J and 45% P. While those who are Judging prefer more rigid, orderly systems while those who are Perceiving are more flexible and adaptable, there doesn’t seem to be any difference in this aspect of your personality as to how you fit in at Brown. As always, everyone’s welcome!
