The New Workday
As I'm titling this post, I realize it sounds like I'm setting out to write some thinkpiece about the slow invasion into our private lives of work—how we're all becoming a generation tied to the office via the phones we rely on for distraction from it. But this isn't that. This is about Workday, the updated system for Brown student employment which went into full effect this year.
All that really happened, as far as I can understand, is that the listings for student employment got integrated into the program that manages pay and benefits for people who work at Brown. Unfortunately, the results have been sort of maddening, and having spent a week this summer figuring out how to navigate all this stuff, I figured I'd share. So here's your 6-step guide to navigating the new Workday.
Step 1: Go to the old student employment page.
This is like the equivalent of moving across your city and driving towards your old place to figure out how to get somewhere, but it's pretty nice anyways. Plus they even have a big box for you to click to find a job! A strong start for sure.
Step 2: Be redirected to the new Workday.

Now read all these tabs. There's even a tab which tells you to go to another tab to learn about how to use Workday! Now confusedly look for the job postings. Go get dinner. Come back. Find and click the Workday@Brown link, realize it's a malfunction which automatically addresses an email to "Workday@Brown," an email address which doesn't exist, and then stop. Go to bed.
Step 3: Wake up. Click "Workday Access" in the sidebar.
Get greeted with this extremely calming and well-designed background. (I'm not even being sarcastically detached™, I really do like it.)
Step 4: Look at this screen for 20 minutes. (Hint: none of the icons involve getting a job.)
Though "Pay" sounds pretty nice.
Step 5: Locate the search bar, and search for "jobs."
You did it!

Step 6: Apply to like 25 things and begin hoping.
Have fun out there, people.
