Fall Trendspotting

The leaves have begun to change and fall. It’s that time of year again: not really fall, but not still summer. My major challenge during this seasonal shift (beyond all of the natural despondency that comes with the sun’s desertion) is to figure out what exactly to wear. The usually failsafe equation of skimpy summer outfit + sweater has not been cutting it lately. And so, I will look to recent fashion week trends to direct us all during this difficult time.

First up: mismatched shoes.

This trend feels like it’s begging for a student adaptation. In fact, I’m fairly certain I’ve seen many people inadvertently rocking this one around campus for a while now. Who knew there were so many trendsetters among us? To master this look to another degree, perhaps pair your chicest fall boot with one of your charming little shower shoes. The contrast will make a statement for sure, and this particular pairing is perfect for the in-between weather we’re in.

Next: Matrix chic.

This one feels very fitting going into fall: it’s harsh and cool, and either makes you look like a total freak or a very mysterious character (hopefully both, if only for the sense of intrigue and drama). You can go for this style by… wearing leather? I guess? Definitely bring in some tiny Matrix sunglasses to signal that you're truly dedicated to the look.

Then: Prairie girl chic.

I’m so glad Laura Ingalls Wilder is finally having her fashion week moment. Absolutely overdue. As for your adaptation, I suggest consistently rocking demure little bandanas (in non-threatening pastel tones of yellow and pink, of course). Take it one step further by donning some classic overalls and, perhaps, even adopting a vaguely Midwestern accent, because you’re nothing if not authentic!

And finally...capes.

This look is actually perfect for this time of year. How else will you transition into the Halloween spirit if you don't look slightly witchy at all times? If this Chloe piece, as featured on the runway at Paris Fashion Week, is a smidge unrealistic for you, perhaps start by waltzing around confidently with your duvet around your shoulders. Not only will you look interesting, but you will be prepared with any change in the weather. A win-win!

I hope you all had a great Fashion Month, and good luck as we dive into the more depressing months of the year!
