SW 2019: Daniel Caesar
With the contemporary R&B vibe of SZA or Frank Ocean, the business model of Chance the Rapper, and the guitar skills of John Mayer, singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar has it all. Born to a gospel-singing family in suburban Canada, Caesar has quickly risen to fame over the course of just a few years. He attributes his success to his artistry, honesty, and his acoustic electric guitar. It also can't hurt that he's one of Obama's favorite artists...After leaving school and home behind to pursue music at the age of 17, Caesar put out his first EP, Praise Break, in 2014, and his second, Pilgrim’s Paradise, just one year later. Inspired by religion and love (and a bit of Kanye), his music quickly gained a cult following. So, when his debut album, Freudian, dropped in 2017, Caesar’s success skyrocketed. The album featured hit single "Get You," featuring Kali Uchis, and after its release, Caesar received Grammy nominations for both Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance. Just one year later, he took home the award for best performance for “Best Part” with H.E.R. (check out his Tiny Desk Concert performance of the song here).
