Staying Warm Sans Winter Coat

The signs of winter are here: the weather is getting cooler, the wind is starting to howl outside my dorm window, and my hair is starting to freeze on the way to class in the morning. And this year, because I fancy myself to be someone who can stand the cold, I haven’t yet asked my family to send my winter coat to me.But now we’re entering a critical period in the semester: there are 19 days before I leave campus. Can I survive? According to weather.com, I should be all right for a couple days (including a balmy 56 this past Sunday), but there looms a wall of 35-degree-highs just as reading period and finals season sets in. Here are my five strategeries for sticking it out. #1: Run, don’t walk. This one seems all right at first glance. You spend less time outside in the cold, you warm up from the running, and you stay in shape. But being the guy who runs everywhere is a role that I’m not sure I want to play. Other downsides include excessive sweating in class and breathing heavily at inappropriate times. #2: Wear all your sweaters. This is actually a good strategy and I won’t knock it unless I try it. gaskitt

#3: Dress like it’s 70 degrees out and act like other people are the crazy ones.I tried this out last night on the short walk from Jameson to the brightly lit hellhole that is Arnold Lounge. The walk there was great, and people were looking at me, noticing how cool I looked for wearing shorts and a t-shirt. But when my friend and I realized we had both left our keycards inside the dorm and were stranded outside in the quad for over two minutes, I was less convinced. We ended up running after someone dressed more appropriately who was opening the door on the other side of the quad, yelling ‘HOLD THAT DOOR!’ (Side note: if you are the person who opened that door for us, thank you. And sorry.) #4: Stand near one of the many smoking holes in the ground.Shoutout to Alisa Caira '22 for her relentless reporting on this important subject. hole #5: Wear a scarf. You may think to yourself, I look a little strange wearing this scarf with only a sweater and sneakers. But the truth is, you look great. Also, isn’t it amazing how warm your neck is? You didn’t know your neck could be this warm. Images via, via, and via Paul Michaud '22.
