Getting Groceries Without a Car or a Meal Plan
CVS
CVS always has very reasonably priced eggs, cheese, overpriced snacks, mac ‘n’ cheese, tons of frozen meals, soups, any kind of baking items you may require. Oatmeal, sandwich makings, yogurt, and snack bars are also here. They also recently added a small selection of bread, which works in a pinch. Be sure to sign up for a CVS card to get extra-long receipts with extra-great savings! The Campus Market, Under FaunceA selection similar to that of CVS with plenty of snacks and frozen meals! If you have any points or bear bucks, use them here to pick up groceries like eggs and deli meats.Haruki ExpressIn addition to having delicious sushi, Haruki Express features a small selection of Asian groceries, from Pocky to seaweed snacks, as well as fantastic frozen dumplings you can make at home. Pick up rice, soy sauce, miso, shrimp chips (!) and sliced fruit here as well as Mochi ice cream. Sometimes you can convince them to sell you fish wholesale!
Metro Mart on ThayerThis used to be a regular stop on my Thayer St. grocery trips, but over the summer the Metro Mart had a dramatic face lift that resulted in the removal of pretty much all fresh produce (milk, eggs, butter) and its replacement with every kind of spicy ramen imaginable. They still have a variety of baking mixes, lighters, cigarettes, Gatorade and ice cream, and sugars.Bagel Gourmet Ole
My go-to if I’m looking to pack sandwiches but lacking in greens or tomatoes. Stop by and ask for a side of anything you can add to a bagel, your total will be around $0.50! Create your dream salad or a yummy scramble at home! Brown University BookstorePick up snack bars, candies, and personal bags of chips and nuts here! Plus is that you can use Bear Bucks, points, or Brown Charge at the bookstore.East Side Mini Mart
Since living in Barbour sophomore year I’ve always been an East Side Mini Mart loyalist. Any baking needs, frozen food, a bit of fresh fruit and veggies, plus all the materials for a delicious homemade brunch can be picked up here.FlatbreadHomemade pizza night with friends? Pick up dough for a large pizza at Flatbread for $3.21, and a bit cheaper on Mondays with your Brown ID!
Brown University Market Share, Thursdays 6-6:30
If you’re not signed up for market share, but want to upgrade from CVS and BGO produce, stop by Hillel Thursdays from 6-6:30, when leftover shares of dairy and bread are being sold. Nothing is guaranteed, but you can usually pick up some fantastic fresh bread and local cheeses and occasionally Narragansett Creamery Yogurt.Farmers Market at the SciLiUnfortunately, this closed for the season the last week of October but watch for its reopening in the spring. Fantastic produce, ciders, Seven Stars baked goods, Knead donuts can all be found here. Check here for winter market locations.
