Rina Sawayama
Do you love Britney Spears and/or Destiny’s Child? Of course you do. Do you often find yourself wishing that their fun 2000 beats were back, but sung by a 27-year-old Japanese British model and graduate of Cambridge University? Of course you do, and I can wholeheartedly agree that I do too.So, you should be really excited for Saturday’s Spring Weekend performer, Rina Sawayama who will set your soul ablaze and bring some much needed Asian representation to Spring Weekend history (shout out to Anderson .Paak as well).
Don’t know anything about her music? Don't worry. Her classic hits like Cyber Stockholm Syndrome and Valentine will definitely get you up from the ownerless nasty-ass blanket you know you’re going to be sitting on come Saturday afternoon. But if you want to study up on her music beforehand, try listening to Take Me as I Am, which definitely will give you that fun Britney vibe. Or if slower songs are more your jam, try Where U Are (one of my favorites).
And if you want to pull that pretentious shit you do in discussion sections? Remark on how her music oftentimes touches on the issues of digital anxiety and the millennial experience on the Internet. Her song, Tunnel Vision, begins with a recording of typing on an iPhone, and ends with a recording of someone locking their iPhone. Her album cover for Where U Are (pictured above) features her with a tattoo of Instagram on her face.Come prepared, you're going to love her and her music.Images via, via, via.
