5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche

If you're planning on seeing PW's 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche, directed by Kayla Kirk '19, eat first. On the one hand, I spent an hour-plus of the show envious of the titular lesbians getting to eat their titular quiche. On the other hand, it hurts more to laugh this much on an empty stomach.During a 1956 meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein, 5LEQ follows the interactions of the five officers of the aforementioned society on their quest to find the perfect quiche, run a successful gathering, and maybe perhaps save the world—we'll see.Kirk's background in sketch comedy (she's president of Skorts, Brown's only entirely non-male comedy group) is evident, and her translation of bit-based humor onto the Downspace stage is seamless. Kirk directs her ensemble cast to levels of commitment that are impressive, to say the least, and shocking, to say a bit more. Raunchy, sexy, gory, musical—this pie play packs a punch. At first impression, it's clear that the audience is in store for a comedy. The bright set, designed by Zach Silberberg '18 is perfectly pleasing and dotted with eggs, chickens, and mentions of Communism. Each audience member is handed a name tag upon receiving their ticket, as we, it turns out are attendees of these annual festivities (most of us warmly welcomed). Bits of audience engagement are scattered throughout the rest of the piece in perfectly balanced fashion. As the show progresses, the talented performances of each of the quintet emerges. Luna Floyd '19, Cleveish Bogle '18, Luna Floyd '19, Jenny Greener '20, Ali Murray '18, and Haley Wong '20 demonstrate their keen talent for comedic timing, slapstick, and gags. It's a comedy of Sapphic proportions.Tonight at 8pm is the last night you can see 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche. Tickets are free and available at the box office one hour before showtime, in TF Green Hall, 7 Young Orchard Avenue. For more information, click here.Image via.
