Attitude Dance Co. Presents: Get to Work!
Are you fed up? Because Brown’s Attitude Dance Company, composed of just 13 powerful female dancers, is. The climate of today’s society has driven them, like many women in the U.S., to the point of exhaustion. Attitude’s response was to do what they know best: dance. This year, the troupe has dedicated their 13th Annual Spring Show to women’s empowerment. From the music, to their movements, to their statement advertising campaign (check out their Facebook!), this year’s show packs a punch, and it is truly not to be missed.Olivia Sykes ’18, who has been with the company for three years, says of the group: “One of my favorite things about Attitude is the fact that we are a group of strong, diverse women who support each other, and this is definitely reflected in our theme this year.” Her sentiment is undeniable on the stage as the dancers convey powerful stories of what it is like to be a diverse group of women in this society, all while dancing to the tracks of some wonderful artists including: Missy Elliot, Sampa the Great, Lenka, Tchaikovsky, and even Maya Angelou’s “I Rise.”Attitude even brings the focus back into the Brown Community with some hilarious performances. One piece, entitled “Newbie-Licious,” tells the story of a freshman’s first week on campus to upbeat music and an original audio recording composed by the dancers. The other, a tribute to the seniors of Attitude, show the four women dancing through their years at Brown. The highlight: their depiction of the sophomore slump. I won’t say more. Go see it!!Also, the show includes a CRAZY GOOD collaboration with Ground Breaking X, blending the two worlds of break dancing and contemporary hip hop. If that doesn’t intrigue you enough, Olivia Sykes says: “People should come to the show to see some amazing dancing and to donate to a great cause. 40% of our proceeds are going to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, so that is some good incentive!” As of now they’ve already raised $400 for Planned Parenthood!Check out these beautiful photos taken by Danielle Perelman to get a sneak peak of the show!
Attitude's final performance will be TONIGHT in Alumnae Hall at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased here or at the door.
