PW Presents: The Second Coming of Joan of Arc

Scannable Document on Mar 23, 2017, 3_45_57 PMEmily Tunkel '19 has brought the radical feminist play written by Carolyn Gage to the PW Upspace. In her one-woman show, Tunkel takes on the role of a resurrected St. Joan of Arc, yet immediately dismisses the moniker and reestablishes herself by her chosen name, Jean Romée. This renunciation of both her male-assigned sainthood and her father's name is the first step in retelling the "hero's" story in an appropriately radical and male-absent manner. It is in this tone that Jean addresses the contemporary woman.Tunkel's show is bare bones. Props, costumes, and even movements are little to non-existent. The verbal story is the heart and soul of the show. Told in gory first-person detail, the story of Jean's life is endlessly rebellious and tragic, and is revealed as an impassioned recollection. The show is remarkably informative, yet does away with history to raise the voice of not only the heroine in question, but every woman who has ever lived. The Second Coming of Joan of Arc will show tonight at 8p.m. in the PW Upspace. Attendance is free. This show contains depictions of sexism, misogyny, homophobia, abuse, rape, rape culture, religious intolerance and persecution.
