According to an e-mail sent by Residential Life, Brown students will soon be able to access HBO (including HBO GO) FOR FREE, among other things. As of January, students on Brown's WiFi network will have access to HBO, as well as other popular channels like FX and IFC. And HBO GO will be accessible even when not connected to Brown's WiFi. Is this real life?!?!?!?!?! Read the whole e-mail below:"tl;dr: Free HBO (including HBO GO!), more HD channels, and an updated channel list coming soon for students who live on campus! We’re thrilled to announce a number of exciting changes and improvements coming to Philo, Brown’s online TV/DVR system, in the coming weeks.  The upgrades will be implemented over winter break, and will be mostly completed by January 20, 2017.  Though every effort will be made to minimize disruption, service may be impacted during the Wintersession.Free HBOHBO will be available to all undergraduates who live on campus.  Effective January 20, HBO will be available to watch live on Philo.  We’re also happy to announce that all of HBO’s programming will be available to watch on demand via HBO GO, and that, unlike Philo, HBO GO will be available even when not connected to Brown’s wireless network.  CIS is working hard to make HBO GO available as soon as possible, but unfortunately we can’t promise it will be ready by January 20; we’ll update you when it’s live.More HDExcept for eight over-the-air local broadcast channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, the CW, PBS, Ion, and MyNetworkTV), the channels on Philo are currently available only in SD.  Once upgrades are completed, we will be able to provide all 60 channels in HD with considerably improved image quality.Channel List ChangesRecently, we’ve gained the ability to provide a number of channels that we did not have access to when we introduced Philo two years ago.  Based on student feedback and viewership data, and after careful consideration, we’re making some adjustments to the Philo channel lineup, effective January 20.Channels Coming to Philo as of January 20: HBO, FX Movie Channel, IFC, Science Channel, CBS Sports Network, Fox Sports 1, NBC Sports Network, MLB Network, NBA TV, NFL Network, NHL Network, Big Ten Network.Channels Leaving Philo as of January 20: Inspiration Network, Bloomberg Television (can be streamed free without a cable subscription at bloomberg.com/live), Link TV, Pivot, The Weather Channel, Travel Channel, VH1, Teen Nick (Nickelodeon will remain available), Lifetime Movie Network (Lifetime will remain available), TVLand, ESPN News (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU will remain available).Full access to Philo’s 60 channels of television is available to all students who live in on campus housing, anywhere on Brown’s campus, and over-the-air local broadcast channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, the CW, PBS, Ion, and MyNetworkTV) are available for all students, faculty, and staff.  Philo features a free cloud-based DVR that allows you to pause and rewind live TV and record all your favorite shows. You can access Philo at tv.brown.edu, via the iOS or Android apps, or with a Roku by following these instructions.  You must be connected to Brown’s network on campus to watch; VPNs are not supported. Thanks to CIS and Residential Life for their hard work in making these changes possible.  We welcome your feedback; please feel free to contact us at residential_council@brown.edu with any comments or questions."Image via.
