We are calling on Brown students to organize and map out the next steps we can take in order to resist hate in Rhode Island and across the country. This event is being held in conjunction with Resist Hate RI, which held its first meeting at Hope High School last Saturday. Over 1,000 community members attended that meeting, and we want to add the power and energy of Brown students to the movement growing in Rhode Island. State representative Aaron Regunberg, representatives from local organizations such as D.A.R.E, Planned Parenthood, RI ACLU and leaders from Brown student groups will speak briefly about organizing and advocacy opportunities on the federal, state, and local levels. We need to move forward as a united movement. Let's discuss -- collectively -- how we might form a coherent, viable, and powerful strategy here in Rhode Island of self-defense and liberation under President Trump.EDIT: Apologies for the lack of clarity/transparency. This event is specifically geared towards those who feel confused or overwhelmed after the election and want to learn of specific avenues for channeling their energies. It is certainly not an exclusively white group of people on campus, but it probably is disproportionately white. This event is attempting to engage all Brown students in community organizing around issues of race, religion, immigration while also acknowledging the existing work POC have been doing since long before the election results. We hope anyone who either wants to speak to existing organizing on and off campus and those who want to learn more about possible avenues for fighting bigotry at Brown, in RI and beyond will join us. The host of this Facebook group will not be leading the discussion -- our intention was just to provide a space to inform folks of opportunities and efforts already happening. Thanks for calling us out and we welcome all feedback/thoughts.Wednesday, November 30Event: Brown Outing Club Presents: Nina WilliamsLocation: 85 Waterman Room 130Time: 7:00 p.m.Join the BOC for their most exciting event of the semester! Event: S&B Presents: HecubaLocation: Leeds TheaterTime: 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.FIRST YEARS AND TRANSFER STUDENTS FREE ON THURSDAYS.Hecuba by Marina Carr is a retelling of the Greek play by Euripides. Hecuba, the wife of King Priam, has survived the death of her husband and the defeat of her people at the hands of the victorious Agamemnon. She suffers further agony as her children are taken from her and her previous life is destroyed. In this visceral retelling of the myth, Carr uses contemporary language and staging to give a new voice to Hecuba as a woman of agency and power. As the narrative moves forward, Carr’s Hecuba makes new choices and takes back control of her legacy. Stepping out from her own myth, Hecuba challenges us to consider how we want to be remembered. This production is Brown Theatre’s annual Senior Slot. The Senior Slot production is reserved for a production proposed by a Brown undergraduate senior student. The design team for the Senior Slot is also led by Brown students, with mentorship and support offered by the production staff and faculty of the department. With a large budget and the resources of the department behind it, the Senior Slot offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to experience professional theatre-making and create a fully realized theatre production on a scale not available anywhere else at Brown. The director of Hecuba is Sienna Vann ’17, the Chair of Sock & Buskin, the student-faculty board that produces the mainstage performance season for Brown Theatre. Taking on this project, Vann hopes to bring attention to the legacies of women in history and in war: how women find the strength to continue in the face of overwhelming adversity, and how history judges women for their choices. This year’s performance season grew out of ongoing conversations on campus at Brown University about issues of diversity and inclusion. Sock & Buskin, the student-faculty board that selects the Brown University Theatre season, wanted to represent this conversation through their choice of plays, writers, directors, and casting. The season aims to reflect the strengths and the challenges that students face in making contemporary performances that embrace diversity and can effect social change. This play deals with themes of war, genocide, and womanhood and asks deep questions about how we remember women in the past, and how we think about the creation of our own legacy. How will you be remembered, and how do you change your own story?Sunday, December 4Event: BMP Presents: Fall Premiere 2016Location: Avon CinemaTime: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.Brown Motion Pictures proudly presents the 2016 Fall Premiere.
