Your off-campus guide for Indigenous People's Weekend
Brown's campus is inarguably great—plenty of food options, lots of new art strewn about, etc. But whether you're just getting acclimated to campus or have been here since the founding of Sayles, it's important to keep in mind there's a whole wonderful city just down the hill. Here's what's going on downtown to help you make the most of your long weekend: Friday, October 7th Cumberland Farms Free Coffee Day: Cumberland Farms is a beloved Rhode Island & Massachusetts convenience store chain... and they're giving away coffee! Enough said. She Keeps Bees, The Huntress and Holder of Hands, Last Good Tooth @ the Columbus Theatre: You might not have heard of these bands yet, but they are staples in the local Providence music scene. Not to mention, they are fantastic. The Columbus Theatre alone is worth getting off the hill to see. Given this lineup, I can personally guarantee you will not regret getting yourself a ticket. Violent Femmes @ the Orpheum: If you're trying to get way off the hill (60 miles off the hill to be more precise), you can blister in the sun with the Violent Femmes. The Providence commuter rail runs directly back and forth to Boston's South Station for $10. Saturday, October 8th RISD Craft 2016: This craft sale features art and objects created by over 100 RISD alumni and students. Ideal for all who are trying to get a head start on their holiday season shopping. Roger Williams Park Zoo's Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular: This annual Halloween tradition is a spectacle to behold. Walk around Providence's zoo to see more than 5,000 professionally carved pumpkins. This event runs through November 6th, but don't you want to start celebrating Halloween as early as possible?
Sunday, October 9th The 2016 Newport Marathon and Half-Marathon: If you like running, then you will love running through Newport. Newport is a gorgeous shoreside city in Rhode Island that you can easily get to via RIPTA. Portions from all entry tickets go directly to charity, so you can get both a runner's and giver's high. PRONK! Community Build: PRONK! Fest is on Monday, but you can join the Providence community in making banners, flags, and art for the affair a day early. Artists from the community will be there to assist and supplies are free. Get craftin'! Monday, October 10th, Indigenous People's Day9th Annual PRONK! Festival: A celebration of all that makes Providence beautiful, PRONK! is back to flood the city with activists, artists, musicians, and makers of all sorts. This magical, free fest is self-described as a "street intervention" and has to be seen to be believed.
