Last-minute packing for Brown
You’re almost at college! And as Orientation looms ever closer, the pile of stuff you're planning on taking to Brown is probably getting bigger and bigger. When you finally realize that your car can only fit so much, Blog is here to help with a list of things you should definitely cram in there, and some things you should probably leave behind. Bring:
- A full-length mirror. Most rooms don’t come with any kind of mirror (unless you’re living in Andrews, in which case we hate you).
- Please please please bring a fan—two if you can! Providence is really hot in the summer and the dorms are not air-conditioned.
- A hairdryer is also useful in the winter if you don’t want your hair to literally freeze when you step outside.
- A desk lamp is basically essential if you ever plan to study at your desk. It’s also good to have a small light that you can use when your roommate is trying to sleep. Believe it or not, the comprehensive ResLife quizzes you filled out are not always 100% effective, and your sleep schedule might be totally different than your assigned roomie's.
- Wipes. These are really good for move-in because you can easily clean your desk/shelves/bed frame.
Some thingseverything will be dusty!
- Way more command strips than you think you could ever use. Trust me, you'll use them all! Command hooks are also really good for hanging up towels and coats and stuff.
Leave:
- Books. Really think about whether you will have room for all six Game of Thrones books. I didn't even have a bookshelf on my side of the room freshman year; I ended up keeping my textbooks in my closet.
- That weird pillow that lets you sit up and study in bed. TRUST ME, the last thing you will want to do in your bed is study. The beds are small enough as is with one or two pillows, so this thing will most likely end up occupying your valuable floor space.
- A whiteboard. If you were thinking of bringing a whiteboard to stick to your door, Brown is already two steps ahead of you—all freshman dorms come with one. Maybe bring a few extra pens for when people start inevitably losing/ stealing the pens you’re provided.
- Actual glass shot glasses. You will use them once and never clean them and you will regret everything.
- A lot of tall storage containers you're planning on putting under your bed. Most, if not all, beds in the dorms just don’t loft that high.
Enjoy your last few days at home and don't stress too much about packing! Whatever you forget you can definitely pick up at the Brown Bookstore/CVS on Thayer Street/the Providence Place Mall (although Command Strips will run out fast).Images via, via, via, and via.
