A Non-Alum's Guide to Alumni Weekend!
Over the last week, while I’ve cried over a $2 bowl of miso soup at Sakura, seniors have participated in a fabulous casino night at Mohegan and drunk beers at the ratty. Now, senior week is finished and alumni weekend is upon us! Alumni are back in BrownTown, leaving non-alums wondering what the heck they are going to do all day. Blog's got you covered with a few ideas! Day Trips:Narragansett Beach – Narragansett is accessible by RIPTA. Get on bus 14 (Westbay Outbound) at Kennedy Plaza and get off at Narragansett Beach. The ride is only an hour and 15 minutes, and the beach is absolutely lovely. Once you’re there, be sure to check out Monahan's Clam Shack.Block Island – Block Island is also accessible by public transportation, but it’s a bit more of a trek. Take the 65X GALILEE via WAKEFIELD (EXPRESS SERVICE) RIPTA to Sand Hill Cove FS Hemlock and walk to Point Judith. From there, get on the Block Island ferry, which typically departs 4 times a day.RISD beach – RISD Beach is a beautiful beach, which is only a 15-minute drive away. The lawn next to the beach is owned by RISD, hence the name. RISD beach is located at 231 Nayatt Rd, Barrington, RI 02806. There is a parking lot!Jamestown, Newport County - Jamestown is a historic downtown village in Newport County. It has a pleasant mix of shops and restaurants walkable from the Ferry landing. The island also boasts beautiful parks and beaches.Newport Mansion Tour - Visitors can tour the historic properties of wealthy patrons including Cornelius Vanderbilt II and William Shepard Wetmore. Mansions currently open include The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Green Animals, Kingscote, Hunter House, Isaac Bell House and Chepstow. Plan your visit here! If you can’t fathom leaving this beautiful city, then explore good old PVD! A fellow blogger already gave a great round-up of Food & Coffee Shops in Providence. Get started early! And if you are looking to just waste time, check out how to waste time after finals. Alumni Weekend Activities for you to attend:Campus Dance – Campus Dance was recently described to me as the “most magical night of the year.” The campus transforms into a beautiful wonderland, and the dance takes place on three separate quads. If you don’t have a ticket yet, they are available for $35 at the door!Graduation – Brown holds a beautiful graduation ceremony on Sunday that is open to all. This year's senior orators are Sabrina Imbler and Jamelle Watson-Daniel. Both will deliver speeches that build on their experiences at the intersection of science and social justice. Enjoy Alumni Weekend!
