Brown Unplugged: Do it in the Dark
This year’s inter-dorm Brown Unplugged competition began last Tuesday. Students can register and compete to reduce their energy use from March 1st to 21st. The participants in the dorm that reduces its consumption by the greatest percentage wins campus-wide fame and the chance to enter into a raffle for free Spring Weekend tickets! There are other events and small prizes this month, as well as a community prize if we beat last year’s 3.5% overall reduction in energy use (16,458.6 kilowatt-hours) and save 17,000 kilowatt-hours total.
- For the competitive conservationist in you, here are some energy-saving tips to win:
- Wash all your clothes in cold water.
- Turn off lights when you leave your room/bathroom/common spaces.
- Turn off power strips and unplug chargers when they are not in use to reduce phantom energy loads.
- Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth and washing your hair.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Keep windows closed when the heat is on.
- Turn down the heat, now that spring is on its way!
- Report leaky faucets to facilities.
Get involved:
- Dodge it in the Dark: Compete in the dodgeball tournament this Saturday (3/12) at the OMAC, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Any group of 6 enrolled in the competition is free to register for the chance to win free T-shirts!
- Lightbulb Swaps, the next two upcoming Fridays (3/11) and (3/18). Come to J. Walter Wilson anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to trade incandescent bulbs for more energy-efficient LEDs.
