Inside the Infinity! Art Gallery
Elodie Freymann '18 and Sohum Chokshi '18 met in VISA100 last year. As avid artists with interests beyond the Visual Arts Department—Elodie plans to declare an independent concentration in ethnonaturalism, while Sohum intends to double-concentrate in Visual Arts and Environmental Studies—the two were inspired to help fill the void of opportunities for non-VISA concentrators to exhibit their pieces.Shortly thereafter, the two created Infinity!, a gallery designed to provide non-VISA students with a showcase. The first exhibitions, which were held over the course of the Fall 2015 semester, featured a vast array of pieces—from paintings and sculptures to projections and ceramics. Shows are pop-up in nature—with exhibitions occurring all across campus (even in Pembroke Field House and underneath the Bear's Lair)—and occur on roughly a monthly basis. While the gallery remains "underground" in nature, it has gained quite a bit of traction across campus, with each show drawing sizable audiences. Infinity! has developed into quite a "community," as Freymann and Chokshi said, prompting new friendships and even collaborations among student artists. Exhibitions are "very social [spaces]," complete with live music. Artists can even sell their workLooking forward, Freymann and Chokshi hope to continue growing their organization and expanding their presence in the College Hill community. In the long-run, the two plan to develop a stronger social media presence, a staff, and bigger exhibits. For now, the two are in the process of planning several outdoor exhibits as the weather (hopefully) warms up.While primarily aimed at non-VISA Brown students, Infinity! is open to art students at both Brown and RISD. Interested students can Facebook message either Elodie or Sohum, who will send a very brief application to be filled out before the show. The next exhibition is tonight, Tuesday, February 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Faunce Underground. (Check out the Facebook event here for all of the details.) For more information, check out Infinity! on Facebook and Instagram and keep an eye out for more exhibits over the course of the spring semester.Image via Elodie Freymann '18.
