Senior Statement
We have been on BlogDailyHerald since our freshman year. As we’ve grown up with the site, our days have often revolved around how to create content that serves all the different reaches of campus life here, and that allows every student to see a bit of themselves in our posts. However, we have found it at times difficult to cover topics and stories that we believe are essential to our mission as a student life blog. As a subsidiary of the Brown Daily Herald, BlogDailyHerald does not have complete financial and editorial independence. Like any college student, we have decided that it is time for us to move out of the house. We have always been a student life blog, but the meaning of this has changed over the course of our time here. As we evolved from a study break to a legitimate source of campus news (though we still love study breaks), we realized that we have so much more growing to do.On today’s campus, a student life blog needs to be accessible and relatable. It has to be thoughtful and intentional in everything that it does and publishes. It should resonate for every student, regardless of race, gender, class, body or sexuality. At a place like Brown, a student life blog has to stand for something. We acknowledge that we aren’t there yet. This sort of change doesn’t happen overnight, but it also doesn’t happen without independence. So, we have decided to depart from the BlogDailyHerald brand that we have grown up with—leaving behind a slew of angry bear-head stickers that plaster our house keys, laptops, and Spring Weekend tanks—and form a new site that better reflects our values. We grew up as a family, and even though it hurts, we leave as a family. From now on, the old staff of BlogDailyHerald will operate under The Blognonian site, because we believe in our ability to provide an inclusive space that represents the entire Brown community. As we are now our own keepers, we hope to accelerate our goal of improving quality. You, the Brown community, are the reason we do what we do. We hope to serve you better than ever before, and all we ask is that you come with us.With love,Caitlin Dorman '16, Tomás Navia '16, and Kate Storey-Fisher '16
